What is chemistry?
Chemistry is the scientific study of matter, its properties, its structure, and the changes it undergoes.
Define matter.
Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. It constitutes all physical objects.
What are the three common states of matter?
The three common states of matter are: 1. Solid: Has a definite shape and volume. 2. Liquid: Has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container. 3. Gas: Has no definite shape or volume, expanding to fill its container.
What is the difference between an atom and a molecule?
An atom is the smallest unit of an element that retains the chemical identity of that element. A molecule is formed when two or more atoms are chemically bonded together.
Distinguish between an element and a compound.
An element is a pure substance consisting only of atoms that all have the same numbers of protons (i.e., the same atomic number). A compound is a substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically bonded together in a fixed ratio.
